The Heart Nebula is a vast emission nebula in the constellation Cassiopeia, located approximately 7,500 light-years from Earth in the Perseus Arm of our Milky Way galaxy. As its name suggests, the nebula's overall shape in wide-field photographs bears a resemblance to a human heart, with glowing lobes of ionized hydrogen gas forming the characteristic rounded form. At the center of the nebula lies the open cluster Melotte 15, a group of young, massive stars whose intense ultraviolet radiation provides the energy that causes the surrounding gas to fluoresce. Several of these central stars are exceptionally luminous O-type stars, among the most massive stars known, with luminosities hundreds of thousands of times that of our Sun. The Heart Nebula is part of a large star-forming complex that includes the neighboring Soul Nebula (IC 1848), and together they are sometimes referred to as the Heart and Soul Nebulae. The inner region of the Heart Nebula around Melotte 15 is particularly rich in structure, featuring towering columns of dense gas and dust, bright ridges, and small dark globules that are being sculpted by the fierce radiation from the cluster. These pillars and ridges represent the boundaries where the expanding HII region is eating into the surrounding molecular cloud, triggering new waves of star formation. The Heart Nebula spans approximately 200 light-years across, making it one of the larger emission nebulae in our galaxy. While it is too faint for visual observation without filters, it is an outstanding target for narrowband astrophotography, where the Hubble palette reveals stunning color contrasts between the sulfur, hydrogen, and oxygen emission regions throughout its complex interior.
Spanning approximately 200 light-years across at a distance of 7,500 light-years, the nebula is ionized primarily by the young open cluster Melotte 15, which contains stars up to 50 times the mass of the Sun.
Enormous — needs very wide field. Classic pairing with IC 1848 Soul Nebula. SHO palette is spectacular.
The dramatic pillars and sculpted gas formations around the central cluster Melotte 15 rival the complexity of the Eagle Nebula's pillars and make the interior a showcase of massive star feedback.
