What Is It?

The Soul Nebula, also known as the Embryo Nebula or Westerhout 5, is a large emission nebula in the constellation Cassiopeia, located approximately 7,500 light-years from Earth. It forms the eastern companion to the Heart Nebula (IC 1805), and together these two nebulae constitute one of the most impressive emission nebula pairs in the Northern Hemisphere sky. The Soul Nebula spans roughly 150 light-years across and is ionized by several clusters of young, hot stars embedded within its boundaries. The primary ionizing cluster is CR 34 (also cataloged as OCl 364), along with additional stellar groups scattered throughout the nebula. Like the Heart Nebula, the Soul Nebula lies within the Perseus Arm of the Milky Way and is part of a vast star-forming complex that stretches across several degrees of sky in Cassiopeia. The interior of the Soul Nebula contains a wealth of structural detail, including bright rims, dark pillars, and dense knots of gas that are being shaped by the radiation and winds from the embedded hot stars. Several small clusters of very young stars have been identified within the nebula, indicating that star formation is ongoing throughout the complex. Radio and infrared observations have revealed molecular cloud material along the nebula's edges where the next generation of stars may already be forming under the compressive influence of the expanding HII region. The Soul Nebula is a challenging visual target due to its relatively low surface brightness spread over a large area, but it is a magnificent subject for wide-field narrowband astrophotography. When captured alongside the Heart Nebula, the pair creates one of the most iconic compositions in deep sky imaging, spanning over 6 degrees of sky.

The nebula extends approximately 150 light-years across at a distance of 7,500 light-years, containing multiple embedded star clusters and dense molecular cloud structures along its periphery.

Imaging Tips

Pair with IC 1805 for the Heart and Soul mosaic. SHO palette reveals rich structure in the dust pillars.

Notable Features

Its pairing with the neighboring Heart Nebula creates one of the most popular wide-field astrophotography compositions, while its interior reveals multiple generations of ongoing star formation.
