The Witch Head Nebula is an eerie reflection nebula in the constellation Eridanus, located approximately 900 light-years from Earth. It derives its evocative name from its resemblance to the profile of a witch's face, complete with a long, pointed chin and a prominent hooked nose, visible in deep photographs. The nebula glows not by its own emission but by reflecting the brilliant blue light of the nearby supergiant star Rigel (Beta Orionis), which lies roughly 2.5 degrees to the east. Rigel's intense luminosity, approximately 120,000 times that of the Sun, illuminates the fine dust particles in the nebula, which preferentially scatter shorter blue wavelengths of light, much as Earth's atmosphere scatters sunlight to create blue skies. This gives the Witch Head its characteristically cold, blue appearance. The nebula is part of the larger Orion-Eridanus Superbubble, a vast cavity in the interstellar medium created by the combined stellar winds and supernova explosions from the massive stars in the Orion OB1 association over the past several million years. IC 2118 likely represents a dense fragment of molecular cloud material that has been shaped and partially eroded by the radiation and winds from these massive stars, particularly Rigel. Infrared observations by the IRAS satellite have revealed that the nebula is associated with a molecular cloud containing dense cores that may be sites of low-mass star formation, triggered by the compressive effects of the Orion-Eridanus Superbubble. The Witch Head Nebula is an extremely challenging visual target due to its very low surface brightness, essentially invisible in any telescope visually. However, it is a rewarding astrophotography subject, where long exposures reveal the full ghostly profile against the dark sky, creating one of the most atmospheric images in deep sky photography.
The nebula spans roughly 50 light-years in extent at a distance of about 900 light-years, illuminated by reflected light from the supergiant Rigel located approximately 40 light-years away.
Extremely faint — needs very dark skies and long integration. Broadband captures the blue reflection color. Very large angular size.
Its striking witch-like profile illuminated by reflected blue light from Rigel makes it one of the most visually evocative nebulae, while its association with the Orion-Eridanus Superbubble connects it to a vast region of stellar feedback.
