What Is It?

Messier 49 (NGC 4472) is a giant elliptical galaxy in the constellation Virgo, located approximately 55.9 million light-years from Earth. It is the brightest galaxy in the Virgo Cluster, the nearest major galaxy cluster to the Milky Way, and was the first member of the Virgo Cluster to be discovered. M49 shines at an apparent magnitude of 8.4 and contains an estimated 200 billion stars within a diameter of about 157,000 light-years, making it significantly larger and more massive than our own Milky Way. The galaxy was discovered by Charles Messier on February 19, 1771. As a giant elliptical galaxy, M49 appears as a smooth, featureless oval glow without the spiral arms, dust lanes, or star-forming regions that characterize spiral galaxies. Its stellar population is dominated by old, red and yellow stars, giving it a warm yellowish color in deep images. M49 is surrounded by a vast system of approximately 5,900 globular clusters, far more than the Milky Way's roughly 150. The galaxy's central region harbors a supermassive black hole estimated at 565 million solar masses. In 2020, astronomers detected a tidal disruption event in a globular cluster associated with M49, where a stellar-mass black hole was observed destroying a passing star. For amateur observers, M49 is relatively easy to find in the Virgo Cluster region but appears simply as a small, round, bright fuzzy spot through most telescopes. It lacks the visual detail of spiral galaxies, but knowing that this bland smudge contains hundreds of billions of stars at a distance of tens of millions of light-years provides a profound sense of cosmic scale. A telescope of 4 inches or more shows the galaxy's bright core and extended halo.
