What Is It?

The Lagoon Nebula (M8) is one of the finest and brightest emission nebulae in the sky, located in the constellation Sagittarius approximately 4,100 light-years from Earth. This vast stellar nursery spans about 110 by 50 light-years, making it one of the largest star-forming regions visible from Earth. The nebula gets its name from the dark lane of obscuring dust that bisects its brightest region, creating the appearance of a lagoon. At its heart lies the Hourglass Nebula, an intensely bright region of turbulent gas sculpted by the ultraviolet radiation of the young, massive star Herschel 36, which is only about one million years old. The entire nebula glows predominantly in the red light of hydrogen-alpha emission, energized by a cluster of hot young O and B-type stars known as NGC 6530, which formed from the nebula's gas within the last two million years. M8 shines at an apparent magnitude of about 6.0 and is faintly visible to the naked eye from dark sites as a bright patch in the Milky Way. It was first recorded by Giovanni Battista Hodierna before 1654, and Guillaume Le Gentil independently noted it in 1747 before Messier cataloged it in 1764. The Lagoon Nebula is a superb target at all levels of amateur equipment. Binoculars reveal the nebula's glow and the embedded star cluster, while telescopes of 4 inches or more with nebula filters show the dark lagoon lane, the Hourglass region, and delicate wisps of glowing gas. It is one of the premier summer deep sky objects for Northern Hemisphere observers.

Spans approximately 110 by 50 light-years at a distance of about 4,100 light-years, containing the young star cluster NGC 6530.

Imaging Tips

Use narrowband Ha to reveal the dark lane (lagoon) dividing the nebula. Pairs beautifully with M20.

Notable Features

Features a prominent dark dust lane creating its lagoon appearance and the intensely bright Hourglass Nebula sculpted by the young star Herschel 36.
