What Is It?

The Cave Nebula, designated Sh2-155 in the Sharpless catalog, is a dim but complex emission nebula located in the constellation Cepheus, approximately 2,400 light-years from Earth. The nebula earned its popular name from the appearance of a dark, cave-like intrusion of obscuring dust that extends into the brighter emission region, creating the impression of a cavern entrance when viewed in deep photographs. Sh2-155 lies at the boundary of the Cepheus B molecular cloud, one of the nearest sites of active massive star formation in the northern sky. The nebula is part of the larger Cep OB3 association, a group of young, hot stars that have formed from the same giant molecular cloud complex over the past several million years. The emission from Sh2-155 is powered primarily by the ionizing radiation from these OB association stars, which illuminate the edge of the molecular cloud facing toward them. This creates a bright ionization front where the radiation meets the dense molecular material, and it is along this boundary that the most interesting structures in the Cave Nebula are found. The interaction between the ionizing radiation and the molecular cloud has triggered a second generation of star formation within the Cepheus B cloud, where compressed gas has collapsed to form a cluster of young stellar objects detected in infrared surveys. This makes Sh2-155 an important site for studying sequential or triggered star formation, where one generation of massive stars induces the birth of the next generation in the surrounding molecular material. The Cave Nebula is a challenging visual target requiring dark skies and moderate aperture, but it rewards astrophotographers with a rich tapestry of emission nebulosity, dark nebulae, and reflection nebulosity, particularly when captured with narrowband filters.

The nebula spans roughly 35 light-years across at a distance of about 2,400 light-years, situated at the ionization front boundary of the Cepheus B molecular cloud.
